Welwitschia Nammic Insurance Brokers (“Welwitschia”) was established in 1984.  During 1997 the shareholders of Bank Windhoek decided to diversify their operations beyond banking.  Bank Windhoek Holdings Ltd (BWH) was established and on 31 March 1998, BWH acquired Welwitschia. Subsequently, 20% of the shareholding was sold to Nam-mic Financial Services Holdings (NFSH), which was later increased to 22.4%.

Today, WNIB remains a subsidiary of Bank Windhoek Holdings Limited, a financial services group with interests in banking and insurance. Bank Windhoek Holdings is controlled by Capricorn Investment Holdings Ltd (CIH).  The head office of WNIB is situated in Windhoek with eleven smaller branches found throughout the country.
